Reguilon Backs Sevilla To Challenge For La Liga Title

Real Madrid left-back Sergio Reguilon believes the Spanish clubs are closing the gap on Real Madrid and Barcelona and has tipped Sevilla to challenge for the La Liga title in the upcoming season.

Reguilon spent the 2019/2020 season on loan at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, where he became one of the most consistent players in Julen Lopetegui’s team.

The Spaniard is back with his parent club Real Madrid after helping Los Palanganas to their sixth Europa League title when they beat Inter Milan 3-2 in the final.

Los Blancos and Barcelona have dominated the La Liga landscape, having won 9 out of the last 10 league titles, but the Real Madrid academy player believes the minnows in Spain are breaching the gap between them and the acclaimed two big teams.

Reguilon was asked about the potential league title winners in the upcoming La Liga season and the 23-year-old backed Sevilla to mount an unthinkable title challenge.

“Each year, things are getting a bit more equal, although Real Madrid and Barcelona are still the best,” Reguilon told Marca.

“It could be the case that Sevilla compete for LaLiga and that’d make me very happy.”

Reguilon also thanked Lopetegui for giving him the opportunity to play regular football while at Sevilla.

“He gave me my first opportunity in professional football and now we’ve shared something very special,” he added.

“When I saw him crying after winning the Europa League, I couldn’t have been happier for him."
