Wright-Philips, who is the son of Arsenal legend Ian Wright, came through the youth ranks of Manchester City before going on to play for Chelsea, Queens Park Rangers, New York Red Bulls and Phoenix Rising, which was his last club.
His performances for Manchester City in the 2004/2005 campaign earned him a spot in the PFA Team of the season.
Wright-Philips is best remembered for his three-year spell at Chelsea between 2005 and 2008, after he was signed for £21m by Jose Mourinho, winning one Premier League and one FA Cup with the Blues.
"I was trying to hold on to [my career] for as long as possible," Wright-Phillips revealed on Soccer AM.
"But over the last few weeks, I've decided it is time to be official and say: I'm officially retired.
"I knew growing up it was not something that lasts forever, but after I had my last operation, it fell into place - I was doing stuff with Manchester City and little stuff with TV - and it helped me glide out of it."
Wright-Philips featured 36 times for the Three Lions of England, scoring six goals and was part of the travelling party for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
