Van Dijk Backs Adrian To Impress In Alisson’s Absence

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has backed newly-recruited goalkeeper Adrian to fill in perfectly for Alisson Becker, who is expected to miss the next few weeks with a calf injury.

Alisson was injured in Liverpool’s opening Premier League game of the season against Norwich City on Friday as he attempted a goal kick in the first half.

Last season’s Premier League golden glove winner has already been ruled out of Liverpool’s UEFA Super Cup clash with Chelsea on Wednesday in Istanbul and unconfirmed reports suggest he could miss up to two months of action as Jurgen Klopp awaits news of a scan.

Alisson’s loss is Adrian’s gain as the former West Ham United goalkeeper made a quicker than expected debut by replacing the Brazilian on Friday.

The 31-year-old Spaniard, who made 150 appearances in all competitions for West Ham United in six years before his release at the end of last season, will continue to debutise in Alisson’s absence and Van Dijk has thrown his support behind him to impress.

‘Alisson is a very important player for us and we don’t know what the damage is yet but we do know we’ll have to deal with it,’ Van Dijk said.

‘I didn’t get the chance to say very much to Adrian except “good luck” when he came on.

‘But he’s an experienced goalkeeper at that stage in his career where he can probably slot into a new team quite easily. ‘He’s been through a few situations in his time. I’m sure he’ll be fine if he just does his normal thing.’
