Firmino has been one of Liverpool’s lynchpins in recent years, having formed a deadly attacking trio with Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah.
The Brazil international’s performances have been questioned in recent times as many have opined that Firmino offers little to Liverpool’s attack.
Firmino only had a paltry nine goals to show in 38 Premier League appearances in the 2019/2020 season.
Liverpool boast quality on all fronts and are keen to defend their Premier League title this season.
The Reds have only added Greece defender Konstantinos Tsimikas to their ranks but missed the opportunity to secure the services of Timo Werner, who ended joining rivals Chelsea.
Durham has insisted that the Merseyside-based club might need a better number nine than Firmino.
“When the ball’s going in the box you’d expect a number nine to score some of those chances, and it didn’t happen,” Durham said to talkSPORT.
“So I would ask the question: is Firmino really good enough for what Liverpool actually want to achieve? Is he all that?”
“Let me just say, he’s been good for them to win the Champions League and the Premier League, I get that, but I’m talking about what Liverpool used to do in the 70s and 80s, dominate for years and years.”
“Do they just want a couple of good years and then it fades off while everybody overtakes them again?”
“Or do they want to become a real top team that builds a dynasty, a proper dynasty, that lasts a long time?”
“Because how do you do that? You keep signing players!"
