Handing Barcelona The Title Will Be Unfair, Says Courtois

Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois says it will be unfair to hand Barcelona the title if La Liga is unable to resume because of the Coronavirus pandemic.

La Liga has been suspended since March but plans are in place to restart the season next month behind closed doors.

Barcelona were two points clear of Real Madrid when the season was paused, with eleven round of matches still left to play.

The Blaugrana’s head coach Quique Setien believes his side should be declared champions if the season is unable to resume, though he prefers matters will be decided on the pitch.

Real Madrid drew with Barcelona in December before defeating the Spanish champions 2-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu at the start of March, and Courtois believes it is too early to declare a winner when his side have been the better team.

"They tied once against us, and lost once, so we showed them that we are a better team, but we're still two points behind," the 27-year-old former Chelsea shot stopper told Belgian TV network RTBF.

"So I don't really agree with that. In England, I could understand if Liverpool become champions. I don't know how many points they are ahead. Then I can understand that they make them the champion. What do you do with those that are supposed to go up and down? I think the economy, the TV money plays a big role in that. It's difficult.

"I'd like to finish the season. I think a championship is based on all the matches that have to be played.

"It's 11 games too early to decide on a champion. If we have to choose a champion before we're done, then I find it's better not to award a champion."

Spain, who are one of the worst hit countries in Europe, have begun easing lockdown restrictions and La Liga players have been given the green light to resume training after undergoing Covid-19 tests.

There have been over 250,000 Coronavirus cases in Spain, leading to 25,613 deaths in the country.
