Uruguay Backed To Win Bid For 2030 World Cup

Gustavo Poyet has advocated for Uruguay to be given the rights to host the 2030 edition of the FIFA World Cup.

The 2030 World Cup will be the 100th anniversary of FIFA's flagship football tournament first being staged by Uruguay in 1930.

Uruguay won the tournament when it was held for the first time.

The South American country have presented a joint bid with Argentina, Chile and Paraguay to host the 2030 World Cup but face competition from another joint bid by Portugal, Spain, Ukraine and Morocco.

"I thought it was natural that Uruguay could be the perfect place to play the World Cup in 2030," Poyet, who played for Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspurs, and won 26 caps for Uruguay, told Stats Perform.

"Do we have the capacity as a country to hold the World Cup? No. So it needs to be shared with someone around – Argentina, Chile or Paraguay.

"The problem is, I used to remember a long time ago when somebody told me that football without politics has gone; it had died. We depend so much on the politics of the country.

"Until the politicians agree, football is not coming together. So I think it would be a shame if it is not in Uruguay, at least one group, maybe two groups."

The United States of America, Canada and Mexico will host the next edition of the FIFA World Cup in 2026.
