The initiative is a way to continue growing worldwide publicity of the league which has been driven by the popularity of players like the FC Barcelona legend.
The holding midfielder, who currently plies his trade at Japan with Vissel Kobe has become the newest star to be named a ‘LaLiga Icon’ after his Spanish teammate Iker Casillas.
“We are delighted to have Andrés Iniesta on board as an LaLiga Icon” said LaLiga President, Javier Tebas. “He is a player than inspires millions and is a fantastic representative for what LaLiga stands for across the globe.”
The naming of LaLiga Icons initiative is aimed at expanding the LaLiga brand through a process focused on digital dissemination, extending the sphere on social networks which allows LaLiga fans to connect with the competition globally.
Gracing the occasion in the Japanese capital, Tokyo were Fernando Sanz, Director of Institutional Relations and LaLiga Ambassadors program and Samuel Eto’o, who played with the midfielder at Barcelona and current LaLiga Ambassador.
Iniesta in his Barcelona spell won the Champions League, LaLiga titles, UEFA Super Cup trophy among other numerous honours.
Following the departure of Carles Puyol, Iniesta became the club’s captain before he joined Vissel Kobe in 2018 on a three-year contract.
