Real Madrid, who had won the previous three editions of the UEFA Champions League, exited the competition at the round of 16 stage at the hands of Ajax Amsterdam.
The 13-time European Champions could only finish third on the Spanish La Liga table, 19 points behind champions Barcelona and also exited the Copa del Rey at the semi-final stage at the hands of the same opponents.
Real Madrid went through three managerial reshuffles last season as a result of their troubles but they have undergone a summer spending spree as they aim to reclaim their place at the upper echelons of European football.
One of the new arrivals at the Santiago Bernabeu is former Chelsea forward Eden Hazard, who joined Real Madrid on a five-year-deal worth up to £88m.
Hazard arrived in the Spanish capital on the back of his most impressive season in England with 21 goals in all competitions to help Chelsea win the Europa League.
The Belgian national team captain knows what his new club is all about and is determined to add more silverware to the side’s ever-expanding trophy haul.
"When you play for Real Madrid you need to win things every season. You need to win, win, win," Hazard told Jay Shetty via Madrid's official website.
"If you don't win the Champions League the fans get down and that's to be expected. At this club you always want to win and that's why I'm here.
"I want to play games, score goals and, come the end of the season, lift trophies."
