Seedorf Sacked As Coach Of Cameroon National Team

Cameroon have sacked head coach Clarence Seedorf after the country’s disappointing showing at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

Seedorf was appointed on a four-year contract in August 2018 but departs after less than a year in charge.

Seedorf was tasked with defending the Nations Cup trophy and qualifying Cameroon to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Cameroon were knocked out of the African Cup of Nations by Nigeria in the round of 16 stage following a 3-2 defeat.

The defeat meant Cameroon were unable to defend the title they won in Gabon under Belgian manager Hugo Broos two years ago.

Although Seedorf underlined his intention of continuing the role, his position came under threat after Cameroon’s sports minister, Narcisse Kombi, appeared on live television and called for his dismissal.

Sports minister Kombi said on CRTV: “The question of keeping Seedorf at the helm of our national team is there for all to see.

“I don’t believe, based on all circumstances that have been created, we will find an answer in terms of renewal.

“Him staying seems problematic to me. I asked the president of the FA to notify him in accordance with the provisions of his contract.

“Our national team played in an inefficient, monotonous and predictable way. There was no real leader in the squad.

“Our exit from the Africa Cup of Nations in the last 16 confirmed our coaches’ inability to build a winning team.

“He’s shown great difficulty in managing the squad and imposing order and discipline. He’s not fit for this job.”

Seedorf departs his position alongside assistant Patrick Kluivert with a record of just four wins from 12 matches in charge of the Indomitable Lions.

Seedorf, who holds the enviable record as the only player to win the UEFA Champions League with three different clubs, has also managed AC Milan and Deportivo La Coruna.
