Guardiola Impressed With Grealish Despite Anonymous Performance At Tottenham

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has insisted he was happy with Jack Grealish’s performance in a 1-0 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

The England international made his Premier League debut for the Citizens against Nuno Espirito Santo’s men and it was one to forget for the 25-year-old.

Having completed a record move to the Etihad Stadium from Aston Villa before the beginning of this campaign, many expected Grealish to hit the ground running in the league.

Grealish could not produce any productive performance in London as the champions lost their first game of the league season but Guardiola says he is satisfied with the Englishman’s output at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

"He was excellent. He played with a personality and created chances. Unfortunately we could not win for him for his debut but he played really well. In terms of give me the ball he doesn't lose the ball, he is so dangerous close to the box,” Guardiola said after Manchester City’s defeat at the hands of the North Londoners

The Spanish coach says the defeat against Spurs was due to lack of enough preparation in preseason and late arrivals due to the Euros.

"We allowed them too much, we could not control it, especially the simple thing when you lose the passes in certain positions it is always more difficult. Football is goals, Son Heung-min scored the goal, we could not,” he added.

"It is normal for a season with not much preparation. The spirit was good but we lost. I am more than surprised how good we have done many things. A lot players arrived too late for Euros, for Covid, for many things. Players come back and every week will be better."
