Di Maria Recounts His Struggles At Old Trafford

Argentina and Paris Saint-Germain star Angel di Maria has recounted his struggles during his time in the English Premier League with Manchester United.

Di Maria joined Manchester United from Real Madrid for a fee around €70 million in the summer of 2014 after rising to prominence in La Liga.

The former Benfica man was given the number seven jersey which happens to be a special number in the history of the Red Devils.

Players like Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo have all donned it during their heydays.

Di Maria failed to live up to his hype as he struggled to make an impact under head coach Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford.

The Argentine eventually left Manchester and made a move to Ligue 1 to play for PSG, and has since hit his known heights.

Many suggested that Di Maria failed to make a mark at Old Trafford due to the number seven curse but the 33-year-old thinks otherwise and has blamed Van Gaal for his woes in England.

Di Maria told TyC Sports: “I didn’t give a f*ck about the Manchester United No. 7, at first they talked to me a lot about it, it was just a shirt.

“My problem at Manchester was the coach. [Louis] Van Gaal was the worst of my career.

“I would score, assist, and the next day he would show me my misplaced passes. He displaced me from one day to the other, he didn’t like players being more than him.”
