Chelsea Extend Giroud’s Contract Until 2022

English Premier League side Chelsea have extended striker Olivier Giroud stay until the summer of 2022.

Giroud’s initial contract at Stamford Bridge would have expired this summer, but the Blues have decided to reward him with another deal following his exploits in Chelsea’s Champions League triumph in the just ended season.

The France international joined Chelsea in the 2018 January transfer window from London rivals Arsenal and has since established himself as a cult hero at Stamford Bridge.

He helped Chelsea to win the FA Cup in his first four months and the Europa League trophy in his first full season.

The 34-year-old has 32 goals in 119 appearances in all competitions for the West Londoners, including half-a-dozen in the 2020/2021 Champions League season, making him the top scorer for the European champions in that competition.

Moments after the 2018 World Cup winner’s contract extension was made official, Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia said: ‘Olivier has been such a crucial part of so many big moments for this club, from his contribution to our FA Cup victory in 2018 to scoring 11 goals on the way to winning the Europa League in 2019. He has continued to score significant goals, and we will never forget his effort against Atletico Madrid on the way to winning the Champions League this season.

'With so much to still to play for, there was only one decision we could make when we exercised the option to extend his contract back in April.’
