Varane Ruled Out Of Champions League Semi-Final Second Leg With Hip Injury

Raphael Varane has been ruled out of Real Madrid’s UEFA Champions League semi-final second leg against Chelsea on Wednesday after suffering an abductor injury.

Varane picked up the injury in Los Blancos’ 2-0 La Liga win over Osasuna over the weekend and did not make it out for the second half.

A positive coronavirus infection meant Varane missed both legs of Real Madrid’s quarterfinal clashes with Liverpool but the France international was back for last week’s 1-1 draw against the Londoners in the Spanish capital.

"Following the tests carried out today on our player Raphael Varane by the Real Madrid medical services, he has been diagnosed with an injury to the right abductor muscle. His recovery will be monitored," a short statement from the club read.

Varane, a four-time Champions League winner with Real Madrid and a World Cup winner with France, has featured 40 times across all competitions for Zinedine Zidane’s men this season.

Real Madrid will also be without Dani Carvajal, who got injured in the first leg last week but could have captain Sergio Ramos back for the crucial encounter.

Ramos has missed more than a month of action for Real Madrid after getting injured in March while on international duty with Spain.

Eden Hazard will be back at his old stomping grounds, having come through three games unscathed after returning from injury.
