Inzaghi Credits Lazio After ‘Easy’ Win Against Zenit

Lazio coasted past Zenit St. Petersburg 3-1 in the Champions League on Tuesday night and head coach Simone Inzaghi has hailed his side’s victory over the Russians.

Le Aquile remains unbeaten in Europe’s premier club competition and sit just a point behind group leaders Borussia Dortmund, who swept off Club Brugge at the Signal Iduna on the same day.

Lazio were off to a flyer in the opening three minutes through their familiar source Ciro Immobile before Italy midfielder Marco Parolo doubled the hosts’ advantage on the 22nd minute mark.

The visitors swiftly pulled one back through veteran Russia striker Artem Dzyuba but Immobile scored again from the penalty spot to make sure Zenit had no chance of mounting a comeback.

Speaking to the media after the game, Inzaghi was delighted with his team’s display.

“We did well to make it seem easy, but it really was not, as Zenit are accustomed to being in the Champions League,” Inzaghi told Sky Sport Italia.

“We have gone beyond the rosiest expectations with eight points from four games. We took two very important draws away from Bruges and St Petersburg despite missing numerous players, but we had to consolidate that with a win today.

“We’re getting players back from injury now and it was very important that we get the points this evening.”

“These lads have tried to play good football for several years now and I think we did against Crotone on Saturday in impossible circumstances.”

“We could’ve done better shifting back on their initial long ball, we had prepared to close down on Dzyuba especially his head, so when we concede a goal, we need to analyse it.

“Lazio scored three goals tonight, could’ve scored six or seven, so objectively there are things we should do better on.”
