Ramos Sets Sights On 200 Spain Caps

Sergio Ramos has set his sights on reaching 200 caps for Spain after catching up with Iker Casillas’ record of 167 appearances for La Roja.

Ramos reached the landmark on Sunday as Spain defeated Faroe Islands 4-0 in the EURO 2020 qualifiers.

A brace each from Rodrigo Moreno and Paco Alcacer ensured that Robert Moreno’s men have six wins from six in the qualifiers.

Ramos made his international debut for Spain in 2005 and was an integral member of the squads that won back-to-back European Championships in 2008 and 2012 as well as the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

"Records are there to be broken,” the 33-year-old defender said after the game.

"I hope that this momentum, enthusiasm and ambition always accompanies me and that I reach 200 games, which is the objective.

"You have to make it difficult."

Iker Casillas, who captained Spain to those historic triumphs, praised Ramos for his achievement by tweeting: "Congratulations on those 167 games!! I hope there are many more. Great moments we have lived with the @SeFutbol."

"I'm flattered by Iker's praise,” Ramos replied.

"I still have to overcome [his number] and I hope I can play for this country for many more years."

Ramos will be able to break Casillas’ record when Spain take on Norway on October 12.

A win in Oslo will all but seal Spain’s place in EURO 2020, which will be hosted in several cities across Europe with the final taking place at Wembley.
