Pochettino Backs Eriksen To Shine Despite Transfer Exit Talks

Tottenham Hotspurs manager Mauricio Pochettino says transfer talks linking Christian Eriksen with a move away from the club have not affected his performances.

Eriksen has spent the last six seasons at Tottenham after joining from Ajax Amsterdam in the summer of 2013 and has been one of the standout players in the Premier League since his arrival.

The 27-year-old Denmark international has just one year left on his contract, meaning he can leave the club on a free transfer at the end of the season unless Tottenham can coax him into signing a new deal.

With the European transfer window not closing until September 2, the likes of Real Madrid and Juventus, who are reportedly keeping tabs on Eriksen can still make a move.

Pochettino started Eriksen from the bench in Tottenham’s opening Premier League game of the season against Aston Villa before fielding him from the start against champions Manchester City in last weekend’s 2-2 draw.

Pochettino admits Eriksen’s contract situation is not ideal but that has not prevented him from giving his best for the club when called upon.

"I always tell the player to not be affected by the rumours," the Spurs boss said.

"In this situation, there is nothing to say, because still we have one more year on his contract. It's not the best situation for him, for everyone.

"He's acting naturally. You cannot put a finger on the problem. You need to try to help.

"I understand the club, I understand the player. You try to minimise the problem, try to treat the situation.

"This is an important player who needs to help the team with his performances to get positive results."
