Klopp Reveals Liverpool Couldn't Afford To Re-Sign Coutinho

Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp, has disclosed the Reds couldn't afford to bring back their departed winger Philippe Coutinho.

Following a wobbling spell at Barcelona after leaving Anfield in January last year, the 27-year-old attacker was linked with a return to Liverpool where he spent five seasons.

But the versatile midfielder has joined German champions Bayern Munich on a season-long loan, with the Bavarians having an option to buy for a reported fee of €120million.

And disclosing why the Brazilian did not return to Liverpool, Klopp has revealed his side couldn't afford the purchase of the player.

"It sounds a bit strange, but we could not afford it," he said at the Sport Bild awards on Monday.

"We have already spent the money that we got for him.

"He's a great player, a great boy," the former Borussia Dortmund coach said.

"We were reluctant to sell him, but Barcelona forced us with money, so to speak.

"He is a player who can change games for the positive. It's not that nice for Dortmund, but it's a great transfer for Bayern and the Bundesliga."

Coutinho featured thirty-five times for Barcelona in the LaLiga, scoring 5 goals with two assists last season.

With Bayern paying Barcelona €8.5 million for his loan deal, the right-footed Brazilian will look to hit the ground running in the Bundesliga to revive his career.

Having finalised his move on Monday, Coutinho will be available for selection for Bayern's trip to Schalke on Saturday after the side shared spoils with Hertha Berlin in their season opener at the Allianz Arena.
