Oblak Targets Champions League Win As Perfect Farewell Gift For Departing Burgos

Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak is determined to help assistant manager, German Burgos, depart the club as a Champions League winner.

Burgos announced on Wednesday that he will be leaving Atletico Madrid after nine years to pursue his dream as a full-time manager.

Burgos has been at Diego Simeone’s side helping to transform Atletico into a major force in European football, with one La Liga title, two Europa Leagues, one Copa del Rey, two UEFA Super Cups and one Spanish Super Cup secured during their time together in the Spanish capital.

They have however suffered heartbreak in two UEFA Champions League finals, losing to Real Madrid in the 2014 and 2016 deciders.

The 2019/2020 Champions League is on hold because of the coronavirus pandemic but Atletico knocked holders Liverpool out in the round of 16 before the enforced break.

Oblak hopes when the competition resumes in August, his side can give Burgos the perfect farewell by winning the competition for the first time.

"Without doubt German is a club legend," Oblak told a news conference.

"He is the second hand of Cholo [Simeone]. He does many things that are not seen but he is an important piece of this project and, as he said already, I hope he will leave the club this season as a champion [in the Champions League], that he will make his dream become true."

Burgos has been Simeone’s right-hand man for close to a decade at three clubs; Catania, Racing Club and Atletico Madrid.

The former Argentina goalkeeper and Simeone were teammates at the national team and Atletico Madrid before they both retraced their steps to take charge of the Rojiblancos in 2011.
