Behind Closed Door Games ‘Sadder Than Dancing With Your Own Sister’, Says Luis Enrique

Staging football games behind closed doors is “sadder than dancing with your own sister”, according to Spain manager Luis Enrique.

The coronavirus pandemic has disrupted the footballing calendar, leading to the suspension of most leagues around the world and one of its rippling effects is the inability of supporters to make it into stadiums to cheer on their teams.

The German Bundesliga became the first European league to resume from an enforced hiatus last weekend with social distancing protocols observed by those on the bench.

The Spanish La Liga is set to follow the Bundesliga’s example from June 12 but Enrique has been left saddened by football’s new developments.

"It's sadder than dancing with your own sister," the former Barcelona and AS Roma boss said on YouTube channel Colgados del aro.

"I saw some games from Germany over the weekend and it's a sad sight. You can hear everything and the intimacy of the better moments is lost.

"We have to remember, I guess that this is big business and I understand that with football back, it may serve as a way of helping people in dealing with confinement. Watching football and basketball in these circumstances is certainly odd.

"I would have been keen to get back to playing as soon as possible and would have had no fear. On a personal level, I'm not worried about the virus but aware that there could be an impact on older people and those susceptible to greater suffering. As a coach, I'm as equally anxious for football to return."
