Ancelotti Bemoans Everton’s Defensive Frailties In Arsenal Defeat

Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti has admitted his side were poor defensively following their 3-2 defeat against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

In-form Dominic Calvert-Lewin got the visitors off to a flyer with an acrobatic effort just 49 seconds into the game, but Arsenal restored parity when Eddie Nketiah tapped home Bukayo Saka’s cross on the 27th minute mark.

The Gunners went ahead six minutes later when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang blasted the ball past Jordan Pickford with a neat finish inside the box.

Richarlison got the equalizer for the visitors late in the first half after Arsenal failed to clear a set piece.

Mikel Arteta’s men regained their lead just 24 seconds after the break through Aubameyang’s header.

In an interview with Sky Sports after the game, Ancelotti said it was a good performance from the Toffees but insists Everton’s defensive frailties was the reason they lost.

"It was a good performance - a lot of opportunities, defensively really poor, conceding three goals like this, normally you lose the game,” the former Chelsea boss said.

"We were able to equalize at the end of the first half. We knew they played on Thursday and they could lose energy at the end, but we were 3-2 down. The key point is we conceded three goals too easily.

"In the first half we played really well. When Andre Gomes came in, the team improved a lot. Offensively we were really good but defensively no.”

"I've seen Andre Gomes in training - he trained without problem. He will start the next game.”

"We are going in the right direction but you have to learn. The fact we were not focused defensively we go home without points."

The result has taken Arsenal into ninth place on the Premier League table, a position previously occupied by the Merseyside-based club.
