Emerson Royal Set For Six-Week Spell On Sidelines After Undergoing Knee Surgery

Tottenham Hotspurs defender Emerson Royal is set for a six-week spell on the sidelines after picking up a knee injury while on international duty with Brazil.

Emerson played the full 90 minutes as Brazil lost 2-1 to Morocco in a friendly game on Saturday but went down under the challenge of Sofyan Amrabat in stoppage time.

The 24-year-old is set to undergo a knee surgery and will miss Tottenham’s upcoming games as a result.

Tottenham said in a statement: "We can confirm that Emerson Royal suffered a meniscus injury to his left knee while on international duty with Brazil last week.

"The defender will undergo surgery before beginning his rehabilitation with our medical staff."

Emerson has made 32 appearances across all competitions for Tottenham this season, scoring two goals.

The former Barcelona defender’s injury leaves Pedro Porro as the only fit senior right back at Spurs, with Matt Doherty allowed to join Atletico Madrid in January and Djed Spence farmed out on loan to Stade Rennes.

Fourth-placed Tottenham, who sacked Antonio Conte earlier this week, are back in action against Everton next Monday.
