Arsenal are sixth on the league table, having won just four games all season despite significant additions in the shape of Nicolas Pepe, David Luiz, Kieran Tierney and Dani Ceballos.
The atmosphere around the club has been contaminated in recent weeks after captain Granit Xhaka was involved in an angry confrontation with the club’s fans when he was substituted against Crystal Palace last month.
Xhaka has since been stripped of the captaincy with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang taking his place.
With no win in their last four league games, Arsenal are eight points behind fourth-placed Manchester City, and there are fears the club could miss out on Champions League football for a fourth straight season.
At a staff meeting at the Emirates Stadium on Monday, head of football Raul Sanllehi and managing director Vinai Venkatesham retained their faith in the former Sevilla manager but warned things need to improve.
“We are as disappointed as everyone else with both our results and performances at this stage of the season. We share the frustration with our fans, Unai, players and all our staff as they are not at the level we want or expect,” read a precis of their comments, circulated by the club and issued in both men’s names.
“Things need to improve to meet our objectives for the season and we firmly believe Unai is the right man for the job, together with the backroom team we have in place. We are all working intensively behind the scenes to turn things around and are confident we will.”
"We never take our fantastic support for granted. We hope we can all stick together and get behind the team in this challenging period, as together we are stronger."
