Bergwijn Keen On Leaving Spurs For Regular Football

Steven Bergwijn has declared his intentions to leave Tottenham Hotspurs this summer in search of regular first team football.

Bergwijn has been in impressive form for the Netherlands national team recently but has hardly had a look-in at his club side.

The 24-year-old joined Tottenham from PSV Eindhoven in January 2020 but has mostly played second fiddle to the likes of Harry Kane, Son Heung-Min, Lucas Moura and recently Dejan Kulusevski in the Lillywhites' attack.

Bergwijn made just four Premier League starts out of his 25 appearances last season, scoring three goals, including a late brace in a 3-2 win at Leicester City in January.

Spurs rejected offers from Ajax Amsterdam in the winter transfer window for Bergwijn and the Dutch champions are back again this summer with another bid which has once again been rebuffed.

With the FIFA World Cup coming up later this year, Bergwijn is aware a lack of games could cost him a place in Qatar and wants to change clubs as soon as possible.

Speaking to AD, Bergwijn admitted after scoring in a 4-1 Nations League win over Belgium: 'I just need to go play. I want to leave Spurs now, that's for sure.

'Is it important that my new club plays in the Champions League? That's not my top priority. It would be nice, but what's important is that I'm going to play.'

'I wasn't allowed to leave Spurs in the winter and then I didn't have any problems. But for the last few months, I was hardly looked after there.

'I want to go and play somewhere weekly. It would be nice if there was clarity soon. My situation now has to be different.'
