On Sunday morning, an 18-year-old woman believed to be the England international’s ex-girlfriend released images, videos and an audio recording of an encounter with Greenwood.
Manchester United confirmed they have been made aware of the issue and said in a statement: "We are aware of images and allegations circulating on social media.
"We will not make any further comment until the facts have been established.
"Manchester United does not condone violence of any kind."
The Old Trafford club have since suspended Greenwood until the full facts of the case have been established.
A statement confirming Greenwood’s arrest later in the day read: 'Greater Manchester Police was made aware earlier today (Sunday 30 January) of online social media images and videos posted by a woman reporting incidents of physical violence.
'An investigation was launched and following enquiries we can confirm a man in his 20s has since been arrested on suspicion of rape and assault.
'He remains in custody for questioning.
'Enquiries are ongoing.
Greenwood has scored six goals in 24 appearances for Manchester United this season.
