Buffon Questions Ronaldo’s Legacy At Juventus

Former Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has questioned Cristiano Ronaldo’s legacy at Juventus.

The Portugal superstar spent three seasons in Turin before joining Manchester United this summer.

Juventus’ main aim for spending £100m on Ronaldo from Real Madrid in the summer of 2018 was to win the UEFA Champions League but the furthest they could get to during his time at the club was the quarterfinals, bowing out to the likes of Ajax Amsterdam, Olympique Lyon and FC Porto.

Ronaldo won two Serie A titles, one Coppa Italia and two Italian Super Cups, and he also scored 101 goals in 134 games for Juventus but many feel his time at the club was a failure because of his inability to win the Champions League.

Buffon has joined former Juventus teammates Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini in opining that Ronaldo’s presence at the club somewhat hindered their progress.

“Juventus had the chance to win the Champions League the first year he arrived, which was the year I was at Paris Saint-Germain, and I couldn’t figure out what happened," Buffon, who now plays for Parma in Serie B, told TUDN.com.

“When I returned, I worked with CR7 for two years and we did well together, but I think Juventus lost that DNA of being a team.

“We reached the Champions League final in 2017 because we were a side full of experience, but above all we were a single unit and there was this competition for places within the group that was very strong. We lost that with Ronaldo.”
