The red-hot Liverpool once again came out victorious to keep their scintillating start to the 2021/2022 season in motion.
Liverpool made an early statement with two goals before the opening 15 minutes thanks to Mohamed Salah and Naby Keita.
The hosts found a way to draw level with two goals from Antoine Griezmann on 20 and 34 minutes.
Both teams settled for a 2-2 draw before halftime and the second half could not produce similar excitement despite Liverpool having the numerical advantage as Griezmann was shown a red card seven minutes into the second half after stamping Roberto Firmino.
Salah snatched the maximum points for the Reds from the penalty spot on the 78th minute mark.
“A tough game which we expected. We did surprisingly well at the beginning,” Klopp told
BT Sport after the game.
“Did we expect it to be that defensive? Probably not. It was not so easy. We scored two wonderful goals then played good football.
"It was 2-0 then obviously Atletico are not too bothered about having possession. The first goal we gave away then the second, it was nice play but the gaps we had there...That was not alright. At half time I think everyone in the stadium thought it was only going one way and we thought 'let's give it a proper try again,'
"We played a really solid second half in a tough game with intense football from both teams. We got the penalty, then there was a red card and obviously it was in our favour."
