Mbappe is in his final year of his contract at the Parc des Princes and he is reluctant to extend his stay in the French capital.
The board have presented numerous offers to the 2018 World Cup winner but he has refused to put pen to paper.
The 22-year-old is said to be yearning for a dream move to La Liga to feature for Real Madrid and Los Blancos were keen to sign him before the closure of this summer’s transfer window.
The La Liga giants made €160m bid for Mbappe but the Ligue 1 outfit refused to sanction the sales of the former Monaco man.
“I asked to leave, because from the moment where I did not want to extend, I wanted for the club to receive a transfer fee so that they could bring in a quality replacement,” the 22-year-old told RMC.
“This club has given me a lot, I have always been happy, the four years I have had here, and I still am. I said it early enough so that the club could react.
“I wanted everyone to come out of this stronger, that we leave hand in hand, to make a good deal and I respected that. I said, if you don’t want me to go I will stay.”
