Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger, Watford’s Ismaila Sarr, Joao Cancelo and Newcastle United’s French forward Allan Saint-Maximin complete the shortlist.
Ronaldo started his second Manchester United spell with a brace against Newcastle United at the start of the month and added another goal in a dramatic 2-1 win against West Ham United.
Rudiger capped a fine month in Chelsea’s backline with the third goal against Tottenham Hotspurs while Cancelo provided one assist and played a key role in Manchester City not conceding a goal during the month.
Sarr scored three goals in September for newly-promoted Watford and Saint-Maximin supplied two assists and scored one goal for the Magpies.
Salah reached 100 Premier League goals for Liverpool in September, scoring in wins over Leeds United and Crystal Palace as well as last weekend’s 3-3 draw with Brentford.
West Ham United’s Michail Antonio won the player of the month for August.
Elsewhere, Jurgen Klopp, Pep Guardiola, Dean Smith, Graham Potter and Mikel Arteta will do battle for the manager of the month award.
