Brady Slams Messi For Being A ‘Cash Incinerator’ At Barcelona

West Ham vice-chairman Karren Brady has criticized Lionel Messi’s financial package during his time at Barcelona.

The 52-year-old says the Argentina international was a ‘cash incinerator’ when he was at the Camp Nou. Messi was said to be earning €70 million per year during his latter days in Catalonia.

The 34-year-old’s contract ended in June and he tried halving his wages in an attempt to stay in Barcelona but the club could not re-sign him due to the financial constraints.

Messi eventually joined Paris Saint-Germain on a two-year-deal with an option to extend it to another year.

Brady has joined other fans and pundits to react to the shocking exit of the La Masia academy product from Barcelona.

"Lionel Messi might have been the greatest player of all time but at a reputed 70 million euros per year he was a cash incinerator," wrote Brady in her column in The Sun.

"He was, it is said, prepared to halve that wage in a new deal but still had to head for Paris.

"The job as hatchet man has fallen to club president Joan Laporta. He blames the whole mess on his predecessor, Josep Maria Bartomeu who resigned last year when it became clear he had floored the Catalan giants."

Messi made 778 appearances for Barcelona after making his debut in 2003 and is the club’s all-time top scorer with 672 goals. He won 35 trophies with the club including four UEFA Champions League trophies and ten La Liga titles.
