Ferdinand believes Greenwood is showing shades of young Rooney following a stellar performance against Leeds United over the weekend from the 19-year-old.
Greenwood is gradually establishing himself as one of the best players at Old Trafford since he came through the ranks.
He has scored 30 goals and provided ten assists in 106 appearances in all competitions for the Red Devils since he made his debut.
Ferdinand was reflecting on the opening weekend of the Premier League and he mentioned Greenwood as one of the players who impressed him.
“I saw some of the stuff in that game [Manchester United vs Leeds United] where I know some of the coaches and people behind the scenes at Man United are saying this isn’t a surprise,” the Englishman said on his YouTube channel.
“It has just been waiting to happen in the first team and his body is catching up. He knows what he needs to do, but Wayne Rooney when he came into the first team was a man already.
“You can see with Mason Greenwood he has built into that frame of being a first team player and at the weekend, Graeme Souness was right, he was one of the stand-out players. Some of the movement, the ball retention, shrugging people off and the finish was a joke.”
