The Red Devils have already bolstered their squad with the signings of Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund, and will be looking to add more signings before the window closes but Barnes believes summer arrivals will not solve United’s problem.
Manchester United have not won a trophy since 2017 and will be willing to end that hoodoo in the upcoming season.
After numerous disappointments in semi-finals for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men in previous seasons, Manchester United bettered their recent performances by reaching the Europa League final last season, but fell short as they were beaten by Villarreal on penalties.
United were very good against the traditional big teams in England but still finished second in the Premier League.
Barnes has urged the Manchester-based club to be more consistent if they want to achieve greater things in the 2021/2022 season.
“The harmony, consistency and balance is where Manchester United have faltered,” the Englishman told BonusCodeBets.co.uk.
“They’ve played well against the big teams but they’ve been inconsistent and I think that will still be an issue for them next year, because the pressure is not on the team, it’s always on the manager.
“Once you have a situation whereby the pressure’s on the manager, now and again the team won’t perform and people will then blame the manager. Unfortunately for Ole, that will still be the case.
“Player for player, they’ve got a great team. I’m not talking about harmony within the camp, although depending on what happens with Pogba and a few others maybe the harmony won’t be there. It’s more to do with the pressure that the team is under to perform.
“Once you start putting the manager under pressure – Arsene Wenger went through it, lots of Liverpool managers went through it – you’ll see inconsistency. People need to stop asking questions of Ole and whether he’s the right man for the job. Unfortunately, that is going to be the situation and will continue to be the situation.
“Sancho’s a great player and it’s good to have a young English player for the future. But I don’t think it’s a position they needed to strengthen. Is he going to play instead of Rashford or Greenwood?
“Harry Kane to United would probably have made more sense than anything else but he’s not going there.
“They needed a defensive midfielder or a defender and Varane is a good signing. Alongside Maguire, they will look much more secure than they have in the past.
