Mbappe feels he let his team-mates and nation down at the National Arena in Bucharest with his penalty miss against the Red Crosses.
The former Monaco forward failed to live up to his standard since Les Blues opening game in the tournament and passed up many chances to open his account as France had to settle for a 3-3- draw against Vladimir Pektovic’s men in 120 minutes of football action.
Penalty shootout was needed to decide both teams’ faith in Romania and Switzerland came out victorious after Yan Sommer saved Mbappe’s effort.
The 22-year-old took to his social media account to apologize for his miss and congratulate Switzerland for the big victory.
"The sadness is immense after this elimination, we could not reach our goal," he wrote.
"I'm sorry for this penalty. I wanted to help the team but failed. Getting to sleep will be difficult but unfortunately it is the ups and downs of this sport that I love so much.
"I know you fans have been disappointed, but I still want to thank you for your support and for always believing in us.
"The most important thing will be to get up even stronger for the next upcoming deadlines.
"Congratulations and good luck to Switzerland."
