Dembele suffered the injury while on international duty with France in the ongoing European Championships.
The 24-year-old was an early second half substitute in France’s second group stage game against Hungary but lasted for just 30 minutes before he was replaced by Thomas Lemar.
Dembele was subsequently ruled out of the remainder of the tournament and will now miss Barcelona’s upcoming pre-season and the start of the 2021/2022 campaign.
Dembele has suffered a host of injuries ever since he joined Barcelona from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2017 which has hampered his progress.
A statement from the Blaugrana read: “Ousmane Dembélé has successfully undergone surgery on a dislocated distal tendon in the femoral biceps of his right knee. Performed in Turku (Finland) by Doctor Lasse Lempainen and under the supervision of the FC Barcelona Medical Services, the operation means the French striker will be side-lined for about four months.”
Dembele’s contract with Barcelona will expire in the summer of 2022 and a new deal will have to be agreed with the former Rennes winger or he will leave for free.
Barcelona have already augmented their attacking options for next season with the free transfer acquisitions of Sergio Aguero and Memphis Depay.
