‘He’s A Modern Midfielder’ – Okocha Lauds Wijnaldum After North Macedonia Masterclass

The Netherlands were rampant against North Macedonia in the final game in Group C on Monday and Georginio Wijnaldum, who scored twice, has received a glowing praise from former Nigeria and Paris Saint-Germain forward Jay Jay Okocha.

Okocha has lauded Wijnaldum, insisting that the newly-signed PSG star is an epitome of a modern midfield player.

Having already qualified for the next round after their second game, the Oranje needed just a point to solidify their place as the group winners against the Lavovi.

Memphis Depay broke the deadlock in the opening 24 minutes before Wijnaldum scored twice on 51 and 58 minutes respectively to seal Frank de Boer’s side’s victory.

The 30-year-old has now scored 25 goals for the Netherlands one more than the legendary Marco van Basten, who scored 24 in 58 matches, in the list of top scorers for the Netherlands and on level terms with former Tottenham Hotspur man Rafael van der Vaart, who finished his international career with 25 from 109 caps.

Okocha, who was speaking as a pundit during the game, was impressed with the former Newcastle United and Liverpool man.

“He has been outstanding for this Dutch team, the captain of the team who stirs his team forward,” Okocha said on SuperSport TV.

“And he contributes a lot defending. He is a very disciplined player and a modern midfield player – we are talking about players that could go box to box – he is one of them.

“He scores goals and keeps good shape for the team. He protects the back four also. So, he is a very good player.”
