Sneijder believes Arsenal are no more part of the big guns in European football and Onana will be better off at the Santiago Bernabeu or Camp Nou.
Arsenal used to be one of the household names in English and European football but they have recently lost their mojo.
The Gunners have not won the Premier League since the 2003/2004 season when they went unbeaten to claim the title.
Despite lacking domestic glory, the North Londoners were always present in the Champions League but things have changed in recent seasons. Arsenal have not played in Europe’s premier club competition since the 2016/2017 season.
The Premier League side are said to be mulling over the possibility of signing Onana but Sneijder has warned the Ajax keeper against joining Arsenal.
“I expect him to leave. I think he is a great goalkeeper. European top? Yes, certainly,” Sneijder told of Onana on Voetbal International Live.
“I’d rather not see him at Arsenal. It’s a fantastic club, but it has slipped in recent years. I’d rather see him play at Real Madrid or FC Barcelona.”
Onana is currently serving a suspension for a doping violation. He was initially banned for 12 months by UEFA in February but his sentence was reduced to nine months by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) earlier this week.
