Zidane Disgusted By Sevilla Penalty As Real Madrid Lose Ground In Title Race

Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane has been left disgusted by a VAR penalty Sevilla received in Sunday’s 2-2 draw at the Alfredo Di Stefano stadium.

Los Blancos had the chance to move level on points with leaders Atletico Madrid, who drew 0-0 with Barcelona on Saturday, but instead Zidane’s men could only nick a point themselves to trail the Rojiblancos by two points with three games remaining.

Fernando gave Sevilla a first half lead but substitute Marco Asensio levelled matters for the hosts before a moment of controversy handed the visitors the lead.

A VAR review cancelled a Real Madrid penalty after Karim Benzema was fouled in the box, instead awarding Sevilla a spot kick of their own for an earlier incident when the ball struck Eder Militao on the arm in his own box.

Ivan Rakitic tucked home the resulting penalty but Eden Hazard deflected Toni Kroos’ strike past the Sevilla goalkeeper at the death to hand Real Madrid a share of the spoils.

Having seen his side miss the chance to secure all three points, Zidane turned his frustrations on the officials for the controversial decisions.

"I'm very angry," Zidane told Movistar. "I spoke to the referee to look for an explanation. It's really complicated because we deserved much more but it is what it is."

“I don’t understand anything from the referee. If there is a Militao handball, it is Sevilla handball as well,” the Frenchman added in his press conference.

“I am not convinced by what he told me. I never speak about referees, but today I am angry.

"Don't ask me any more about this, I've already said what I think. They have to explain the handball rules to me and that's it. We're going to fight until the end. Until the death."
