Muller Hails 'Abnormal' Lewandowski With Bundesliga Record In Sight

Thomas Muller has hailed Robert Lewandowski as 'abnormal' after the Polish striker edged closer to Gerd Muller's long standing Bundesliga record with a hattrick against Borussia Monchengladbach on Saturday.

Lewandowski's latest treble against Marco Rose's men took him to 39 Bundesliga goals for the season, moving him to within one of Muller's 40-goal haul achieved in the 1971/1972 season.

With two games of the season still to play, Lewandowski is odds on favorite to break the former Germany international forward's record.

On a day when Bayern were confirmed as German champions for a ninth straight season even before kick off after second placed RB Leipzig lost to Borussia Dortmund, Muller reserved special praise for Lewandowski following a resounding 6-0 win.

"We do have to say, that we as a team try our hardest for him. But how he is able to score those goals is not normal as well," Muller joked post-match.

Lewandowski remains hopeful that he will be able to break the record, with matches against Freiburg and Augsburg to come.

"I have the chance to break this record," Lewandowski, who claimed his 249th Bundesliga victory – surpassing Claudio Pizarro as the foreign player with the most wins in the league, said.

"It won't be easy, for sure. Ok, we have two games but if I want to break it, I have to score two goals.

"I have to work hard in the next game because I know it won't be easy. But to break the record would be something amazing for me as well because if you have 34 games – even less in my situation this season – it will be something.

"I have to believe it can happen. I have the chance. I have to be ready for this."
