Claudio Marchisio Retires From Football

Veteran Italian midfielder Claudio Marchisio has called time on his professional football career at the age of 33.

Marchisio called a press conference on Thursday afternoon at Juventus’ Allianz Stadium to announce his decision following a short stint with Russian side Zenit Saint Petersburg last season.

The former Juventus midfielder was a free agent after leaving the Russian champions in the summer.

Prior to moving to Zenit in the summer of 2018, Marchisio was one of the back bones of the Juventus team that won the Scudetto multiple times.

He joined Juventus at the age of seven and played over 300 games for the Bianconeri, scoring 37 goals and creating 43 assists for the Italian champions.

Luck however eluded Marchisio in the Champions League as he lost both the 2015 and 2017 finals to Barcelona and Real Madrid respectively.

The 33-year-old made his international debut for Italy in August 2009, starting in a friendly game against Switzerland.

Marchisio won 55 caps for Italy, featuring in two FIFA World Cups (2010 and 2014) and the 2012 European Championships, where Italy lost to Spain in the final.

On Thursday, Marchisio wrote on his Twitter account: 'I’d made a promise to the kid who dreamt to become a football player.

'I would have played until I had felt the marvel stepping into the pitch.

'I wasn’t fulfilling my promise anymore, that’s why I prefer to stop. So, thank you dream, you gave me strength, success and joy!'

His illustrious career has been curtailed with a series of injuries and now he has been heavily linked to join Maurizio Sarri’s backroom team.
