The football world has been taken aback after news went rife that top teams in Europe are ready to form a league that will rival the Champions League.
PSG, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund were reluctant to join the other 12 clubs as founding members, and Al-Khelaifi believes football should be a game for all not a selected group of teams.
The traditional ‘top six’ clubs in England have formally started the procedures to discontinue with their interests in the European Super League and the Serie A clubs are willing to follow suit very soon.
In a public statement published on the PSG’s official website, Al-Khelaifi has sent message to the other European clubs:
He said: “PSG firmly believes that football is a sport for all. I have been consistent on this point since the very start. We must remember that as a football club we are a family and a community, whose heart is made up by our supporters. There is a need to evolve the models of UEFA competition that currently exist and the proposition offered yesterday by UEFA.
“This concludes 24 months of deep consultation with everyone across the European football landscape, goes in this direction. We think that all proposals without UEFA’s support do not resolve the problems which the football community is currently facing, but are motivated by personal interest. PSG will continue to work with UEFA.”
