Rooney believes the North Londoners should have waited a bit longer before sacking the former Chelsea and Manchester United head coach.
Mourinho was drafted in to replace Mauricio Pochettino in November 2019, six months after the Argentine manager led Spurs to the Champions League final.
The decisions to appoint Mourinho was not welcomed by many but the Portuguese coach steadied the ship and led Tottenham to finish sixth on the Premier League table.
Spurs started this campaign on a high, having led the league table at some point this season, but things have gone south in recent weeks. Despite being in the Carabao Cup final, Tottenham have underperformed in other competitions.
The English side took to their social media accounts to announce the departure of the Portuguese coach and Rooney has revealed he is quite surprised about the decision.
“I think it’s crazy doing it before a cup final. It’s strange timing anyway. Surely they could have waited until after the cup final if that’s the direction they wanted to go in,” Rooney said about Mourinho’s sacking, as per Daily Mail.
“Mourinho is a manager who loves winning trophies, that’s quite clear to see. He’s won a lot of trophies throughout his career.
“If there was one manager to set up a team to play against Man City in a cup final it’s Jose Mourinho. Tottenham haven’t had the best of seasons so from that point of view so it’s crazy and a massive risk.
“I’m sure Daniel Levy could have waited until the day after the game, that would have made more sense if they wanted to get rid of Mourinho.”
