Mbappe and Haaland are considered as the hottest duo in European football and Altobelli believes the Belgium striker deserved to be mentioned in the same breath with the duo.
Lukaku has taken his game to another level since he moved to Inter Milan from Manchester United in the summer of 2019.
The former Chelsea and Everton man has become one of Antonio Conte’s rapiers which slides through the chink in the armour to hurt opponents.
The 27-year-old has 61 goals in 88 games in all competitions for Inter Milan since his arrival, and is currently leading the charge to bring the Scudetto to the blue and black side of Milan for the first time in eleven years.
His stupendous statistics have forced Altobelli to compare him to Haaland and Mbappe.
“At the beginning of the season, I thought he was an average player, but I was wrong,” Altobelli told La Gazzetta dello Sport.
“Italy is the university of football. If you want to make a further step, you must play in Serie A,” he continued.
“Lukaku is not only capable of scoring in any way and against any opponent, but he is also a great leader who helps the team. For me, he is on the same level as Lewandowski, Haaland and Mbappé.”
Altobelli scored 209 goals in 466 games with Inter during his playing days. He won one Serie A title with the Nerazzurri and the 1982 World Cup with Italy, but is Lukaku as strong as Altobelli was?
“Nice question, but we’re talking about different eras. I was among the best strikers of my generation, and now the same is true of Romelu,” the former forward concluded.
