Gasperini Not Let Down By Atalanta Defeat Against Lazio

Atalanta were beaten at home by rivals Lazio in the Serie A on Saturday and head coach Gian Piero Gasperini has insisted he was not let down by his side’s 3-1 defeat.

Gasperini believes his side were up to their game, insisting he did not see a bad performance from the players.

Simone Inzaghi’s men got their revenge for the Coppa Italia loss on Wednesday with a comfortable win to inflict Atalanta’s first league defeat in 2021.

Adam Marusic got the visitors off to a flyer in the opening three minutes and Argentina forward Joaquin Correa doubled Lazio’s advantage six minutes after the interval.

Mario Pasalic halved Atalanta’s deficit to get the game back on with eleven minutes to go, but Vedat Muriqi restored Lazio’s two-goal cushion to secure a sixth consecutive victory in Serie A for the Rome-based team.

“The opening goal allowed Lazio to be able to play their best and efficiently,” Gasperini told DAZN after the match.

“I didn’t see a bad performance from my players, unfortunately we conceded some foolish goals.

“It’s one of those games where some episodes led to success for the visitors. Overall, I didn’t mind Atalanta’s performance.”

“Last Wednesday, the 10 of us managed to score goals by closing down at the back and not conceding anything.

“Today, we had to recover, we created. We believed in it, also because we had more energy than Lazio.”

Atalanta will look to atone for their sins when they face Napoli in the Coppa Italia semi-final on Wednesday.
