Ter Stegen recently voiced his frustrations after failing to play a single minute in Germany’s EURO 2020 qualifying games against Netherlands and Northern Ireland.
Those comments did not go down well with Neuer, who asked Ter Stegen to show some respect to the likes of Kevin Trapp and Bernd Leno as they are all eager to be in goal for the national team.
Manuel Neuer was in post for both games as Ter Stegen continues to serve as back up to the Bayern Munich goalkeeper.
There have been calls for Ter Stegen, who has 22 caps for Germany, to be given a look-in by Joachim Low as a result of his impressive performances for Barcelona but the manager has stuck by his captain.
Speaking ahead of Barcelona’s Champions League opener against Borussia Dortmund later on Tuesday, Ter Stegen described Neuer’s reaction as ‘inappropriate’ but called for an end to the controversy.
He told a news conference: "I would like to say something about this. You cannot say we have competition for the goalkeeper position and then expect the players to be happy with the situation if they don't play. Football is about happiness but also disappointment.
"Manuel Neuer does not need to comment on my personal feelings and measure them, I'd say. It's my own opinion. If you think about the last few years, you realise that I always behaved well and what Neuer and other people have said is not fair.
"His remarks were inappropriate but I don't want to say much more. I want to end this controversy."
