Berbatov believes Ramos could bring ‘experience and steel’ to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.
Ramos is left with just six months on his current deal at the Santiago Bernabeu and the board are said to be unwilling to renew his contract due to the 34-year-old’s financial demands.
The current situation between Real Madrid and its captain has put many big European clubs like Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain on alert and Berbatov has urged his former club to join the fray.
“I have read the reports about Sergio Ramos and there is a lot of speculation about his future.
“He could bring a lot of experience and steel to any team. Although he is 34, he is still a top player and United could do a lot worse. If he is available, I can see a lot of teams interested in signing him.
“At his age of course Real Madrid are reluctant to offer him a long contract. Maybe they are arguing about money because it always comes down to money, but both sides should think long and hard about it because the grass isn’t always greener.”
Ramos has played more than 660 games for Real Madrid since he joined from Sevilla in 2005, winning five La Liga titles and four Champions League trophies.
