Ferdinand Names Chelsea As Dark Horses In this Season’s Champions League

Former England defender and pundit Rio Ferdinand is impressed with Chelsea so far this season and has tipped the Blues to be the unlikely winners of this season’s Champions League.

With the addition of a number of players before the 2020/2021 season, Frank Lampard seemed to have found the winning formula at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea currently sit third on the Premier League table, two points behind Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool who occupy the top two spots.

On the European scene, the West Londoners comfortably secured qualification to the next round of Europe’s premier club competition.

Chelsea made a statement by thrashing Europa League champions Sevilla to win Group E.

Lampard’s men face tricky Round of 16 tie but Ferdinand is adamant that Chelsea are potential winners of the Champions League.

“They could be, definitely,” Manchester United legend Ferdinand told BT Sport. “They’re a team that are starting to gel together.

“Frank’s done very good business up until now. It’s difficult. Get through the Christmas period, see how the team is shaping up injury-wise and form-wise.

“We’ll have to re-address this as well, our form and expectations for each team because form and injuries play a big part.”

Chelsea will know their next opponent in the last 16 Champions League on Monday.
