FA Fine Yerry Mina £10,000 For Violating Betting Rules

FA Fine Yerry Mina £10,000 For Violating Betting Rules

Everton’s Colombian defender Yerry Mina has been fined £10,000 by the Football Association for violating betting rules.

Mina appeared in an advert for Betjuego in Colombia earlier this year and has been warned of his future conduct in addition to the fine.

The 24-year-old’s involvement in the commercial went against some part of the Football Association’s regulations on betting and he pleaded guilty after being charged.

“Everton FC’s Yerry Mina has been charged with misconduct in relation to the FA’s Betting rules,” said an FA official statement in July.

“It is alleged that the defender breached FA Rule E8 (3) by participating in an advertisement for betting activity which he is prohibited from engaging in.

The rule Mina broke says: “An individual participant, when acting in a personal capacity, shall not be permitted to advertise or promote any betting activity that the participant is prohibited from engaging in by Rule E8(1) or E8(2).”

Everton cited Mina’s limited command of the English Language (the advert was done in Spanish) in his defence and the fact that all proceeds for his participation in the advert went directly to his charity organisation was crucial in avoiding a ban.

Mina joined Everton from Barcelona for a fee of £28.5m in August last year after a superb outing for Colombia at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia where he scored three goals.

Mina’s first season in England was hampered by a number of fitness issues as he made just 15 appearances in all competitions for the Toffees but he has started all four of Everton’s Premier League games so far alongside Michael Keane.
