De Bruyne Plays Down ‘Best Player’ Tag

In-form Belgium and Manchester City midfielder Kevin de Bruyne has channeled his focus on just doing his best for club and country after it was suggested to him that he was the best player in the world on current form.

De Bruyne continued his electrifying start to the season by supplying a hattrick of assists and scoring one goal as Belgium blew away Scotland 4-0 in Glasgow on Monday.

The 28-year-old in the process became the first player in the EURO 2020 qualifiers to record three assists in a single game.

De Bruyne has also recorded five assists and one goal for Manchester City in just four league games and was nominated for the Premier League player of the month last week.

"Fortunately I don't have to judge that," De Bruyne said when asked if there is anyone playing better than him at the moment.

"I just have to play well. I'm just content. I'm feeling good.

"I have already played many matches and am starting to come into my rhythm. That is important, because there are still many games to play."

De Bruyne added: "When your career is over, you can see what you have done afterwards. But right now I just want to win competitions. The faster we do that, the better. That can also be very important for the rest of the season."

After the impressive highs of the 2017/2018 season where De Bruyne played a pivotal role in Manchester City’s record-breaking title triumph and was narrowly beaten to the PFA Player of the year by Mohamed Salah, the Belgian had a checkered 2018/2019 campaign as a result of a number of fitness issues.

De Bruyne made just 11 Premier League starts last term in a campaign hampered by knee and hamstring problems but has begun this season in fine form.
