Messi’s Legacy At Barcelona Indelible, Says Fabregas

Spain legend Cesc Fabregas believes the legacy of Lionel Messi in Barcelona can never be tarnished despite the uncertainty about the Argentina international’s future at Camp Nou.

Messi’s future is currently unknown after the 33-year-old tried to force his way out of the club during the summer due to the Catalans’ failure in the 2019/2020 season.

The six-time Ballon d’Or winner has less than a year left on his contract and could leave Barcelona for free at the end of the 2020/2021 season.

Fabregas, who played with Messi in the fabled La Masia and later the senior side, was asked if an exit from the club could have a blow on Messi’s stupendous legacy, but the former Chelsea and Arsenal man refuted those assumptions.

The Monaco midfielder told Catalunya Radio: “Not at all. Leo has been a big star and the fans know it. They will think, ‘Wow, he is leaving’.

“I think the day he leaves FCB – from the first minute – everyone will give a big value to all he has done during these seasons, nobody can steal that legacy from him. It is something that will remain forever.”

“It was a pity to see how people inside the club tried to hurt him, but in this sense, as a Catalan, I am grateful that he stayed at Barca,” Fabregas added.

The Spaniard was further asked if he knows Messi’s future since he is widely known as a friend of the Barcelona captain.

He added “I don’t know anything about his future next summer. Nothing.”
