The Italian has labeled Barcelona’s decision as a ‘moment of madness.’
Suarez established himself as one of the most important players in Barcelona during his six-year stay at the Camp Nou, having won everything wearing the iconic red and blue jersey.
Following Barcelona’s disappointing end to the 2019/2020 season where they missed out on the La Liga title to rivals Real Madrid and were put to the sword by a ruthless Bayern Munich side in the Champions League quarter-final, the Catalonia-based club decided to let go off many players during the summer as they try to usher in a new era.
The Uruguay international was made to join Atletico Madrid in a deal worth around £5.5m after the 33-year-old was deemed surplus to requirements at the Camp Nou following the arrival of Ronald Koeman as new Barcelona head coach.
Many, including captain Lionel Messi have questioned the club’s decision to oust a player who is the third all-time top goal scorer for Barcelona, and Cassano has added his voice to castigate the board’s decision.
“They said Suarez was old when he left Barcelona,” Cassano said as quoted by Marca.
“Another moment of madness.”
“He scored 350 goals in six years. I don’t understand why they kicked him out [the club]. Then they put [Antoine] Greizmann as a center forward.
Suarez scored 198 goals and provided 109 assists in 283 games in all competitions during his time in Barcelona.
