The Premier League champions have lost the likes of Virgil Van Dijk, Fabinho, Trent Alexander-Arnold and much recently Joe Gomez to injuries.
Gomez and Netherlands superstar Van Dijk are expected to remain out for the vast majority of this season.
Jurgen Klopp is expected to sign a new center-back due to the Merseyside-based club’s current predicament and Nicol, who played at Anfield between 1981 and 1994, has encouraged his former side to go in for Upamecano, who he thinks has the acumen to fit in the Liverpool squad.
The 58-year-old Scottish told ESPN FC: “Oh my goodness, [Liverpool’s title chances] drop a good 20, 25 percent from where they were, without Van Dijk.”
“I think right now Liverpool absolutely, because of this injury, have to go out and spend a lot of money.”
“Joe Gomez, at 23 years of age, has already had two major surgeries. That means the chances of it happening again rise.”
“You’re talking about percentages of Liverpool defending [the title], you talk about percentages of a player having another bad injury.”
“So I think this forces them into it and they should go and get Upamecano.”
Upamecano was widely linked with a move to the Premier League this summer before he reneged on his decision to sign a long-term contract with the Bundesliga outfit.
